Junior School Curriculum

Literacy, numeracy and much more

The Junior School curriculum focuses on establishing strong skills in the key areas of literacy and numeracy, and core subjects include English, Mathematics, Integrated Studies (including Science, History and Geography) and Personal Development. This is complemented by a specialist program, including Art and Craft, French, Music, Physical Education, Religious Education and Library sessions, and context-based inquiry learning days, incursions and excursions, community partnerships, academic and design innovation learning opportunities, and community service activities. Learning about the environment and the importance of sustainability and social innovation is learnt through a STEAM based approach, with a focus on fostering a curious and creative approach.

Learning is enriched by the purposeful use of a range of digital tools and resources. Canvas, the School’s learning management system provides a platform for the delivery of curriculum in classrooms, as well as a valued platform for our continued reporting model for assessment. Students in Junior School are provided with an iPad to further enrich learning and foster responsible digital citizenship.

Each student’s individual needs are placed at the centre of their learning program and lessons are differentiated to cater for individual learning capabilities and areas of need. Our approach to curriculum design and learning delivery employs a range of researched strategies and resources best suited to address the needs of our students and ensure a contemporary learning approach. Through formative assessment means, testing and monitoring, a dedicated Individual Programs Department identifies those needing additional targeted support or extension, which may occur in the classroom or in small groups. Planning for different rates and styles of learning is a key feature of our curriculum.

We also understand that our students will need to learn about concepts and ideas that have not yet been developed. Our teachers participate in a professional learning program to support professional growth in skill building in key areas of learning and pedagogy. We are constantly exploring new ways of teaching so that our students receive the very best education. We provide opportunities to partner with our parent community to ensure learning is supported via school-based sessions so that the learning can continue at home, with parents an integral part of the process.
